Mozilla Nashik Community started this year’s Maker Party festival by hosting a event in the poor municipal school. This school was so backward that it didn’t even have computers for the students. So these students had no or very less knowledge about computers or the Internet. So we made the event agenda as simple as possible. We tried to cover all simple topics.
Agenda :
Computer Basics:
- What is Maker Party?
- What is COMPUTER? and its parts?
- What is Software & Hardware?
Internet Basics:
- What is internet? (we used animated videos to explain them the concept)
- What is a browser?
- What is a URL?
- How to use any search engine?
- How Internet works?
- How websites are made?
- HTML introduction
MS Office basics:
- How to type a letter?
- What is wordpad & notepad?
MS Paint:
- Explained them all the tools of paint
VR experience :
- Virtual reality was very new to them so we used the google cardboard And show some amazing virtual reality videos.
Before start the session, we saw that their machine didn’t have Firefox, so 1st we have installed Firefox browser on their machine and this is how we did our great start.
After install, it looks great!!!
What is COMPUTER?
I have asked everyone to abbreviate each term of COMPUTER, it was very healthy conversation while we all are discussion each term. Here is abbreviation :
C – Commonly
O – Operated
M – Machine
P – Particular
U – Used for
T – Trade,
E – Education &
R – Research
Then, Akash & Rahul have explained them a different parts of computer and their use. Then we moved to working on Internet. Here, Mayur took a lead and started to explain about internet and its working. He has incliuded me too in it and we have decided to teach them about in different way.
Activities taken as follows :
- How the Internet works:
Step 1: we used cardboards to explain the flow
we wrote ISP on one cardboard
we wrote User 1 2 3 4 on other 4 card-boards
Step 2: Select 5 students. And give them card-boards
Step 3: Start by explaining them what Internet service provider (ISP) is?
Step 4: Ask the students what will happen if user 1 will send a email to user 2. Then Send a Email card-board from user 1 to user 2 via the ISP
Step 5: Repeat this step until all the students understand the flow
School staff felicitate us, here is the cool pic with them
